As head of the scientific council of the Research and Development Foundation, Michael oversaw the “3D Bionic Pancreas” project which led to the creation of Polbionica, of which he is now the CEO and CSO. Between 2001 and 2007 he specialized in General Surgery in the Department of General and Transplantation Surgery of the Jesus Child Clinical Hospital. In 2008, he underwent training in the field of transplantation of islets of Langerhans (patient classification, perioperative care, isolation of Langerhans islets) at San Rafaelle Ospedale, Milan, Italy under the supervision of Prof. Antonio Secchi (past president of the International Pancreas and Islets Transplant Association).
Between 2008 and 2010, he was a clinical transplantation specialist at the Department of General and Transplantation Surgery. In 2014, he completed a post-doctoral degree in medical science and became the head of the Isolation of Langerhans Islets Lab at the Department of General and Transplant Surgery and the director of the Islet Transplant Program. Michael is the inventor of a new transplant procedure (endoscopic transplantation of the gastric submucosal islets), a procedure was first introduced in the world in 2013 and in use in several American transplantation centres. His research also focuses on pre-transplant machine perfusion systems, live donor, pancreas and islet transplantation, and endoscopic procedures. He is a co-founder of a video platform for doctors (www.medtube.net) and a medical online community (www.medizzy.com) which currently has about 400,000 active users per month. He is a member of the Association of Polish Surgeons and the Polish Transplant Society, as well as a co-founder of the Polish Association of Tissue and Cell Banking. He is a member of the following international scientific societies The Transplantation Society, International Pancreas & Islet Transplant Association, International Society for Organ Donation and Procurement. Between 2013 and 2016, he was the editor-in-chief of the quarterly MEDtube Science. In his many years of scientific and medical career he has been awarded many times as well as honoured the Golden Cross of Merit by the President of the Republic of Poland.
